Doctor Who: 10 Best Companion Performances In NuWho
5. Freema Agyeman (Martha) - Human Nature/The Family Of Blood
Harry Lloyd. Jessica Hynes, Thomas Brodie-Sangster. All on form. David Tennant in one of his most impressive appearances during his reign as the Doctor. Standing out opposite that cast is one heck of a feat, and yet somehow Freema Agyeman manages it, delivering one of her best performances as Martha Jones to date.
She manages to capture the internal conflict that is the central arc of the character in this story. Agyeman is absolutely believable as a present day character trapped in the past. She captures the sense of a person trying to fit into their role, but things like Martha's bursts of over-familiarity (for the time) with John Smith are so naturally done that they betray how the character really wants to act, again in an absolutely believable manner.
But that's not all fans get. Agyeman portrays the sense of abandonment Martha feels really well, with downcast looks and frustrated line delivery. Additionally, she gets to show off Martha's inner strength. The moment where she tears into Nurse Redfern for putting her down by ranting her way through her medical knowledge is an iconic fist-pump moment for Martha fans. Sadly, she didn't get many of those.
