Doctor Who: 10 Best Episodes Of The Decade

Series 9 was a much better collection of episodes than the previous series, and whilst there were still a few duds, Moffat also manged to pen one of the best episodes in the show’s history.

‘Heaven Sent’ is a wonderfully creepy, superbly written piece of science-fiction television that works as both a standalone episode and as a key story in the context of the whole series.

Though it’s almost an hour in length, the entire episode is a one-man show that follows the Doctor as he attempts to escape from an isolated castle whilst simultaneously being chased by a creature from his nightmares. It’s this slow-moving, shrouded creature that adds plenty of fear and tension to the story.

Yet the best aspect of this episode is undoubtedly Capaldi’s performance. Watching the Twelve Doctor think out loud whilst he manoeuvres his way through the castle is fascinating owing to a superb lead performance.

Moffat’s script also deserves praise as it manages to keep the story constantly moving without ever feeling rushed, and the ending of the episode brings the narrative together perfectly.

It’s a shame the following episode (‘Hell Bent’) is a little patchy, but the slightly disappointing series finale cannot alter the fact ‘Heaven Sent’ is the Twelve Doctor’s magnum opus.
