Doctor Who: 10 Best Episodes Of The Decade
2. The Day Of The Doctor (2013)
In order to celebrate fifty years of the show, ‘The Day of the Doctor’ was essentially a massive thank you to the fans who had supported Doctor Who over the course of its history.
It’s clear from the start those involved with the show were willing to throw everything into this episode. The set designs and the CGI are far above the usual standard of the BBC, and the story (written by Moffat) is a well-considered mix of epic sci-fi and personal, emotive dialogue.
The unique selling point of ‘The Day of the Doctor’ is seeing the Eleventh Doctor interact with the Tenth Doctor. Sure, these scenes are essentially fanservice, but it’s impossible not to smile as these two incarnations of the Doctor bounce off one another, and the addition of the War Doctor (played by John Hurt) provides yet another fascinating dynamic.
The other highlight of the episode is how it fully embraces the show’s potential in terms of setting. During the eighty-minute episode viewers experience present-day London, the rural countryside of sixteenth-century England, and the planet Gallifrey in the midst of the Time War.
Despite the fact this episode is loaded with fanservice, it achieves what it sets out to do perfectly. ‘The Day of the Doctor’ is a delight for fans of Doctor Who from start to finish.
