10 Great Doctor Who Moments From The Brain Of Morbius

8. The Frankenstein Connection

When Dr Neo Cortex look-alike Solon sets about creating a replacement body for the artificially preserved brain of evil Time Lord Morbius, he may not have been aware of the story of Dr Frankenstein. Yes, the Mary Shelley classic seems to have been a large inspiration for writer Terrance Dicks and the Doctor Who production team when creating the character of Solon as his intentions and ideas seem to be a paint-by-numbers copy of Dr Frankenstein. While Morbius has a history of being a tyrant long before his brain was put into the body of a patchwork monster, the comparisons are clear. The brilliance behind using The Modern Prometheus as a template lies in the formula, the drama, and the sci-fi pedigree inherent in using the classic novel as a model. Tonally, the story comes across as being in a very similar palette which makes for a truly spooky viewing experience indeed.
