Doctor Who: 10 Greatest NuWho Speeches

1. War - Twelfth Doctor

"When you fire that first shot, no matter how right you feel, you have no idea who’s going to die! You don’t know whose children are going to scream and burn! How many hearts will be broken!"

Peter Capaldi is undoubtedly the king of monologs; we could have made a whole list based on his speeches alone.

This speech is one of Twelve’s finest moments that demonstrates his character’s belief system when it comes to war, and shows the trauma The Doctor carries around with him every day from the Time War.

There was no backing music while this scene played out, just Capaldi owning the stage as he waltzes around, condemning the Zygons and Kate Lethbridge-Stewart about their decisions to start a war; showing that no matter who starts it or who wins, no one truly comes out on top.

This monologue fundamentally shows the importance of The Doctor as a character, as he begs for two people not to start a war as he demonstrates major points as to what can come as a consequence of their actions. The Time War has been a running plot of the show since Christopher Eccleston brought back the character. Although we’ve seen how the war has affected each Doctor individually, we never truly understood the heartbreak and trauma the Doctor lives with every day until his monologue in The Zygon Invasion.

You can see and hear the desperation in The Doctor as he doesn’t want anyone to experience what he went through all those years ago. Above all, he doesn’t want innocent lives to be lost because two people had a disagreement with each other.
