Doctor Who: 10 Greatest Thirteenth Doctor Stories
1. The Haunting Of Villa Diodati
Remember Captain Jack Harness' warning about the Lone Cyberman back in Fugitive of the Judoon? The Haunting Of Villa Diodati acts as both a sequel to that story and a prequel to the series finale, all while being an incredibly scary episode that ponders humanity and the upgrading of Cybermen, as well as functioning as a historical explaining the origins of Frankenstein.
In the titular villa, a number of strange things begin to happen, before the Lone Cyberman, Ashad, appears in all his menacing glory. The design of Ashad is incredible, as he is a half-converted Cyberman stuck between robot and human forms, and looks brilliantly grotesque and disgusting.
On the hunt for Cyberium, Ashad shows some incredible emotion before lurching back into Cyber-mode and threatening to destroy planet Earth if the Doctor does not give him what he seeks. The Doctor relents and hands the Cyberium over, before leaving to follow Ashad through time to thwart his plans in the series finale.
With it being a family show, Doctor Who can often struggle to find the right balance of horror and humour, but The Haunting Of Villa Diodati blends both elements together perfectly to create the best Thirteenth Doctor story of all time.
