Doctor Who: 10 More Characters We Want To See Return

Within minutes of the rumour that the post-credits sequence to The Pilot would contain a jaw-dropping spoiler, fans were speculating that the Doctor’s granddaughter, the original companion as played by Carole Anne Ford was returning. The same conclusion was made by many fans two years ago when the significance of Maise Williams’ character was teased in the series nine trailer. Both were wildly off the mark and to date the only Susan we’ve seen back is the Doctor’s horse.

Hopes that Susan might be making her long overdue return have been bolstered by Peter Capaldi’s fondness for the idea, especially since both he and David Tennant appeared to get their fanboy wishes granted with the return of the original Cybermen and the Zygons respectively.

Carole Ann Ford reveals that in a tour of the set, Capaldi was running around the TARDIS shouting “She’s got to come back. She’s got to come back.” If it’s good enough for the Doctor, then why not? Despite claiming that the show ruined her career as an actor, even Ford agrees.

The impetus for Susan’s return goes back way further, right back to her original departure in fact. In a rare tear jerking moment, the First Doctor agreed to leave her with Tom Campbell on 22nd Century Earth. His final words to Susan contained a promise he’s yet to have fulfilled:

“One day, I shall come back. Yes, I shall come back. Until then, there must be no regrets, no tears, no anxieties. Just go forward in all your beliefs and prove to me that I am not mistaken in mine.”
