Doctor Who: 10 Most Compelling Series 9 Fan Theories
4. The Doctor's Resemblance To A Roman Is Explained
Steven Moffatt himself is responsible for stoking the fires of this particular fan theory. He has said a few times that he's keen to explain why the Twelfth Doctor looks so much like the Roman merchant Lucius Caecilius Lucundus seen in the Series 4 story The Fires of Pompeii.
Of course, the most likely outcome is that there will be a single line of dialogue relating to this point ("Everyone's got a double" or something similar). Fans are hoping there will be rather more to it than that.
In the book About Time 5, which details the history of Doctor Who in minute detail, writers Tat Wood and Lawrence Miles postulated that the Time Lords modelled their bodies on people they'd encountered, as a way of explaining away the peculiar number of doubles featured in Doctor Who.
It seems that Moffatt is using an idea put forward by Russell T Davies, so it remains to be seen whether the explanation about to be given on screen is the same as the one in About Time 5. But, really, how many vaguely credible reasons can there be?
