Doctor Who: 10 Most Fascinating Characters Of Series 8

3. Missy

What better way to subvert the furor over a Doctor gender swap than pulling that trick with the Doctor€™s arch nemesis. Missy/The Master is the villain that is most like the Doctor. She is what the Doctor may become without the influence of his companions. It€™s unsurprising that an incarnation as a woman takes nothing away from the Master€™s power or charisma. Michelle Gomez gives a hilariously offbeat performance proving that gender has very little to do with whether a character works or not. It€™s all about the energy and intelligence of the actor and skill and depth of the writer. Is this a way for Steven Moffat to subtly give the audience a chance to get used to the idea of a female Doctor? Isn€™t it time for a forward thinking program like Doctor Who to acknowledge a lack of diversity in ethnicity and gender in both the roles of the Doctor and the companion?
