Doctor Who: 10 Most Unlikely Allies Of The Daleks

9. Varga Plants

Ogrons Day of the Daleks
BBC/UCLAN

Like the Daleks, these strange but extremely deadly sentient plants were native to Skaro and could be weaponised to attack other worlds with.

First encountered in 1965's Mission to the Unknown and later in The Daleks' Master Plan, the Varga Plants had been brought to the planet Kembel to act as security for the Daleks' base.

Mobile and equipt with poisonous thorns which could turn victims into Varga Plants, this venomous vegetation proved lethal to anyone in its path. Infecting them with a hallucinogenic toxin, victims would lose control of themselves and very quickly become homicidal.

With the original episode lost by the BBC, the University of Central Lancashire recreated Mission to the Unknown in 2019 and released it on the Doctor Who YouTube channel.

Created with original '60s production values, the Varga Plants returned to menace the Space Security Service and honour their appearance as one of the times that the Daleks have waged war with the help of another species.
