Doctor Who: 10 Things Clara's Dreams Taught Us In Last Christmas
8. Hidden Insecurities
By the looks of things Clara was feeling like somewhat of a spare part when she and the Doctor first arrived at the Arctic base. She initially seemed to take a back seat whilst the Doctor began unravelling the mysteries of the Dream Crabs with the help of his new team of expeditioners, particularly the eagle-eyed Ashley Carter (Natalie Gumede) to whom he took a particular liking to. At one point Clara was watching them at work and a hint of jealousy could be detected - her face (above) said it all - and she even grimmaced that she'd be of more use making the Doctor a brew. Ouch. Considering it was all a dream, though, this might've been a representation of Clara's inner fears that she and her best friend had lost their spark as a result of their time apart. Perhaps she was feeing a little rusty after her absence and felt like she was no longer good enough to be associated with the Doctor. At the same time the Doctor was probably feeling anxious to have her back in his life, too, especially as he'd just found out that she'd lied to him by telling him that Danny Pink was still alive. He'd told her a pretty big porkie too, of course, so it takes one to know one. Fans have seen glimmers of Clara's insecurities before, most notably in Deep Breath in which she was seen questioning her abilities as a teacher. She pulled herself together then and it didn't take Clara long to get back into the swing of things in Last Christmas, either. Before you could say "dreaming" the TARDIS team were back in action and just in time to save themselves from a deadly Dream Crab infestation, too. Timing on that.
