8. Powerful Character Drama
Possibly one of the biggest selling points of Chibnall as showrunner is his ability to write great character drama. Broadchurch is littered with many powerful moments - case in point everything with Olivia Colman (who hopefully will return for a bigger role in Doctor Who after her wasted performance in The Eleventh Hour). In Doctor Who he delved into the lives of Amy and Rory in a way that had never been explored before, giving them some richly deserved development before their final end. In Torchwood, he wrote the horror of a woman encountering her son after he had disappeared into a rift and returned a broken, screaming shell of his former self. But it is with Broadchurch that he really shone, with mesmerising characters and stories over both series that show just what kind of magic he might bring to Doctor Who.
