Doctor Who: 10 Things You Never Knew About Series 3 Of NuWho

5. Cliffhanger Crossover

Fans rejoiced in Utopia when John Barrowman as Captain Jack Harkness returned to the Doctor's life in the only way he knows how... with an almighty crash, bang and wallop! If you hadn't been watching the first series of Doctor Who's adult-oriented spin off, however, you wouldn't have realised that this scene was actually a continuation of its finale (End of Days) cliffhanger which saw Jack mysteriously disappearing from the Hub after hearing the sound of the TARDIS materialising above him, much to the bemusement of his fellow Torchwood team. That's why Jack was even in Cardiff in the first place, of course, as he realised - after being resurrected by Rose as the Bad Wolf and using his vortex manipulator to return to Earth in the 19th century (to cut a very long story short!) - it was where he was most likely to be reunited with the Doctor who would one day return to refuel the TARDIS on the city's time rift. The moment finally arrived in Series 3 and he sure as hell wasn't going to let it pass him by. He didn't even say goodbye to Gwen and the gang as he sprinted across the Bay (be fair - he had been waiting hundreds of years for this!) before clinging onto the outside of the dematerialising TARDIS for dear life as it hurtled dramatically through the time vortex. Say what you like about Jack, but he sure knows how to make an entrance! This was the closest the two shows had come to 'crossing over' before they literally crossed over in the Series 4 finale.
