Doctor Who: 10 Times The Doctor Just Didn't Give A F***

2. Pulling A Gun On Kahler-Jex

A Town Called Mercy
BBC Studios

We’ve mentioned the Doctor being worn down and pushed to their breaking point by the constant battle against evil with seemingly no end in sight, and nowhere is this more apparent than in A Town Called Mercy.

After a period of time travelling alone, Eleven is rejoined by the Ponds on an adventure that takes them to the Wild West, where they face a cyborg Gunslinger who is after a helpless doctor hiding in a town called Mercy. Cue the mid-episode twist that this doctor, Kahler-Jex, isn’t so innocent after all and is actually responsible for the horrific experiments that turned the Gunslinger into the cyborg we see today. This is where something snaps in the Doctor.

He drags Jex out of town by the scruff of his neck, ready to leave him to the Gunslinger, at gunpoint. We can see the rage and despair in the Doctor’s face, and we’re as unsure of what he’s about to do next as he is.

Jex is spot-on when he analyses the Doctor, Sherlock-style, identifying his rage and guilt as a fellow survivor of a war. But what Jex doesn't realise is that the Doctor will indeed go to any lengths to get the job done – lengths such as sacrificing an old man to Shooty McRobotFace to save the rest of the town.

Thank god for Amy's rousing speech. Maybe stick to travelling with friends from now on Doctor?
