Doctor Who: 10 Times The Doctor Went To War
2. Thousand Year War
This infamous war was where it all started for the Daleks.
Once, the Daleks were like us - the Kaled race of Skaro. But when the Kaleds waged war on the planet's other indigenous lifeforms - the Thals - the battles ravaged their world. What became of Skaro was a radiated, trench-lined battlefield.
The reason for war? Nobody knows, and by its darkest days, that information was lost to both factions. In years to follow, the Daleks would claim it was because they had always been the superior beings.
By 1975's Genesis of the Daleks, Skaro was no longer just a murky battleground but a nest of secret underground bunkers and domed cities.
During the years of conflict, radiation on the surface became too strong and began to mutate the population. Scientist Davros saw this as an opportunity to encase his Kaled people in tank-like shells.
Out of this war was born the Mark III travel machine - also known as the Dalek.
Travelling back to the beginning, both the Fourth and Twelfth Doctors were offered the chance to stop Davros and prevent the Daleks' creation. However, neither could bring themselves to causing the same kind of genocide the Thousand Year War already had.
This fixed-point in time remains as one of the deadliest and most important wars in Who history, and the origin of the Doctor's greatest enemy.
