5. Stuck In The Mud
Poor old Martha. She was only supposed to summon the Doctor back for "just one trip" (yeah, yeah, we've heard that one before!) when she called for his aid during Earth's Sontaran invasion but she ended up getting caught up in another adventure altogether when the TARDIS unexpectedly transported our heroes to Messaline in the midst of a seemingly endless war. It happens to the best of us. Unfortunately, though, it all proved to be too much for Martha on this occasion when she formed an unlikely allegiance with Hath Peck who subsequently died after drowning in a bog. Watching her new friend pop his clogs resulted in Martha breaking down in said bog with the Hath's untimely demise serving as a painful reminder of just how unfair and difficult life with the Doctor can be. She wasn't cut out for life aboard the TARDIS anymore but once again Martha was left to deal with her conflicting emotions alone because the Doctor was off getting to the root of the mystery with Donna and his daughter (oh yeah, the Doctor got a daughter in this episode, by the way - it was a very long day!). Needless to say, Martha called it a day (again) at the end of the adventure but, as you've probably guessed, this wouldn't be the last time fans would see her, either. She just can't stay away, can she? And thank God she can't!
