Oh, Susan, where art thou?

Apart from a cameo in the 1993 Children in Need special, Dimensions in Time, the last time we saw the Doctor's granddaughter is during her rather underwhelming return in The Five Doctors. Always a topic of discussion amongst Whovians, fans’ hopes of a reunion between the original time-travelling duo were teased when we spotted a photo of Susan on the Twelfth Doctor’s desk at the start of series 10; something which Peter Capaldi was very enthusiastic about.

Despite the Doctor previously mentioning that they no longer have any family, we know that anything is possible in Doctor Who - like Rory Williams and his very own version of live die repeat.

However in an interview with CultBox in 2006, Carole Ann Ford revealed her frustration at the lack of Susan's character development:

My character was going nowhere. I was just doing the same thing every week - we arrived somewhere, I got into trouble and then I got saved! Originally I was supposed to be supremely intelligent and have telepathic capabilities. They let me do the telepathy once after I nagged them, but the interesting aspects of the character were just wiped out.

Conversely, Ford has always maintained an affection for the show, and has regularly spoken of returning someday.

The name's Colbourn, James - yeah, doesn't quite have the same ring to it.
