Doctor Who: 10 Unresolved Storylines & Mysteries That Need To Be Explored

5. The Paternoster Gang Adventures

The terrific Victorian-era crime-fighting trio featuring the Silurian Madame Vastra, her wife, the "boy" Jenny and Sontaran Strax have been a welcome addition to the Whoniverse since initially brought together at the Battle of Demon's Run. As well as possessing excellent chemistry thanks to their unique personalities, they have come to the Doctor's aid when his need was greatest.

They fought for him at Demon's Run; helped him get over his post-Amy and Rory funk; rescued him from remaining like a Madame Tussauds waxwork reject; and got him through his standard erratic post-regeneration phase.

It shows how much of a special place the Paternoster Gang have in the Doctor's hearts after they're kidnapped by the Great Intelligence in The Name of the Doctor:

I have to save Vastra and Strax. Jenny too, if it's still possible. They cared for me during the dark times - never questioned me, never judged me, they were just... kind. I owe them. I have a duty.

Steven Moffat was asked about a potential spin-off series, but he simply didn't have the time as he was writing Doctor Who and Sherlock. Thankfully Big Finish came to the rescue, as always, and produced a series of enjoyable audio adventures, although a few more on TV certainly wouldn't go amiss.

The name's Colbourn, James - yeah, doesn't quite have the same ring to it.
