Doctor Who: 10 Writers We Want To See Return
6. Ben Aaronovitch
As Doctor Who started its descent into obscurity in the late 1980s, plans were afoot to shake things up, and a new generation of writers stepped up to steer the ship. Just a shame that it was inexorably headed for the rocks by that point.
Part of this new team of Doctor Who writers was Ben Aaronovitch, who contributed Remembrance Of The Daleks to Season 25, Battlefield to Season 26, and four-part space opera Earth Aid to the cancelled Season 27 - some high-octane action adventures full of shameless fan-service that helped to build an arc about who the Doctor truly is. Sound familiar?
Aaronovitch was one of the writers who oversaw Doctor Who’s transition into essentially what it is now: Better production values, faster pacing, and more focus on character and story arcs. Which makes him an excellent fit for New Who. Especially since his two televised stories stand up incredibly well nearly thirty years later.
Aaraonovitch has kept up his connection to Doctor Who with several novels over the years, and an adaptation of Earth Aid as an audio play for Big Finish in 2011, so he’s certainly not out of practice. So bring on New Who’s answer to Remembrance Of The Daleks. Either that or some unlimited rice pudding.
