Doctor Who: 10 Writers We Want To See Return
5. Robert Shearman
Theatre writer Robert Shearman is quite possibly the biggest one-hit wonder of modern Doctor Who. Adapted from his Big Finish audio play Jubilee, the Series 1 episode Dalek not only helped to sell the new Doctor Who’s more serious side, but also made the Daleks scary again.
Doctor Who doesn’t really need to sell itself as high quality drama anymore but Shearman’s approach to writing Dalek was pitch perfect for its time, taking everything thought to be silly about the Daleks and exterminating them one by one. It's an approach that means he’d be perfect for resurrecting another old monster given the chance.
But even away from breathing life into monsters thought to be played out, Dalek shows that he’s more than capable of adding some serious drama into the proceedings. That raw anger, conflict of morality, and even empathy for the very worst creatures in existence is powerful stuff and would be a valuable addition to future episodes.
While Shearman has said that it was a good idea to focus on his own work after Doctor Who, he’d never say no to returning at some point. Chibnall, you know what you have to do.
