Doctor Who: 11 Things You Never Knew About Series 5 Of NuWho
2. The Mondosian Cybermen Were Supposed To Return
The epic cliffhanger of The Pandorica Opens featured an alliance of big bads arraying against the Doctor to trap him within an eternal prison. As it turns out, though, this was a huge mistake (even for them!) as it only resulted in the destruction of the entire universe. Damn. Among the Daleks, Silurians and Judoon were the Cybermen. This alien race looked similar to their Cybus counterparts introduced in Series 2's Rise of the Cybermen/The Age of Steel however Steven Moffat originally envisioned a very different design that would hark back to the original Mondosian Cybermen from the classic era. Unfortunately there was no budget left to do a complete redesign and instead, during this story and Series 6, only the 'C' from their chest plates would end up being removed. Moffat would ultimately get the redesign he wanted in Series 7's Nightmare In Silver which has carried them through to the present day.
