Doctor Who: 11 Things You Never Knew About Series 5 Of NuWho

1. Everything Changes But It All Stays The Same

Doctor Who remains a success today because of its ability to change. It can regenerate the Doctor when the star wants to move on and replace companions in order to keep the show fresh. Change has been a fundamental element of NuWho, too, with either a Doctor or a companion leaving the show at the end of each series. But with Series 5, Moffat shook this dynamic up once again. The Big Bang is the first time since Doctor Who rebooted that a series finale does not feature a change of cast. Amy Pond continues to travel with the Doctor, this time bringing in her husband Rory Williams in tow. It marked a confidence in the show to be able to keep ideas fresh, changing the dynamic on the TARDIS by adding a second companion rather than replacing one entirely. This approach has continued throughout the Moffat era with Amy and Rory leaving mid-series a couple of years later and now Clara remaining with the Twelfth Doctor through to Series 9. This looks likely to change with Series 9, however, if Jenna Coleman's Clara leaves the Doctor before the end of the year, and that is just as exciting. Like the classic era, audiences never know when someone is going to stay or go... well, at least in theory. There is only so much you can get away with thanks to internet spoilers these days, of course! What did you think of this list? Are there any other little known facts about the Eleventh Doctor's first series that should have been included? Share your words of wisdom in the comments section below, and stay tuned for our Series 6 retrospective, coming soon!
