Doctor Who: 11 Things You Never Knew About Series 5 Of NuWho
11. David Tennant Nearly Stayed
David Tennant announced his departure from Doctor Who shortly after showrunner Russell T Davies, making the Steven Moffat-led Series 5 a virtual clean slate for Doctor Who. But that almost changed when Moffat revealed his plans for his debut series to Tennant. Had he stayed on, the events of the Pandorica may have been more than just a trap for the Doctor - it would have resulted in his regeneration, too. According to Moffat, he would have kept Tennant on the show for one final year. The first episode would have started with the TARDIS crashing into a young Amelia Pond's garden. The Tenth Doctor would have been terribly bruised and battered and tended to by Amelia, fish custard and all. He would then fly off again, just like the events of The Eleventh Hour, and, when he visited the grown up Amy Pond later, he wouldn't remember her childhood encounter. Series 5 would then have take place in the same manner but ended with the Doctor crashing into Amelia's garden for that first scene and then flying off to regenerate. The likelihood is that the Doctor that finally arrived at the wedding would have been the first appearance of the Eleventh, adding a whole new dynamic to Amy, Rory - and River's - relationship with the Doctor. Interesting, eh?
