Doctor Who: 12 Great Big Finish Stories You Have To Listen To

10. The Chimes Of Midnight

When Paul McGann finally agreed to star for Big Finish in 2001, the company could finally claim to be chronicling the new adventures of Doctor Who, at least until the show came back in 2005. McGann proved what a tragedy it was that he only got one outing on the telly by fast becoming one of the best audio Doctors. He effortlessly brought back the youthful enthusiasm that he had in the TV movie, tempered by a darkness that was never even hinted at.

McGann was partnered with India Fisher who played Charlotte 'Charley' Pollard, an 'Edwardian Adventuress', whom the Doctor saved from a doomed airship causing massive complications for the Web of Time that played out over several years. Predicting the Tenth Doctor and Rose storyline, the Doctor fell in love with his companion before circumstances dragged them apart. Stories such as Neverland, the 40th Anniversary tale Zagreus, and The Girl Who Never Was are as epic as any season finale of NuWho.

The Chimes of Midnight by Rob Shearman (who wrote Jubilee) is a spooky and fiendishly clever tale where the Doctor and Charley arrive in a townhouse where the servants keep dying horribly only to come back to life again. It's like a super-creepy mash up of Downton Abbey and Sapphire and Steel. Shearman is responsible for some of the greatest early Big Finish audios and it's a shame he hasn't written more for the company.
