Doctor Who: 14 Most Paused Moments Of The Last Decade

4. The Ninth Doctor Regenerates (The Parting Of The Ways)

Imagine what it would've been like for a new Doctor Who fan watching their beloved regenerate for the first time. You don't have to just imagine it, of course, because everybody remembers their first regeneration, whether it took place way back when or since the show's revival in 2005. You never forget the first time you bid adieu to 'your' Doctor and some would argue that you're not a bonafide fan until you've experienced it at least once. For a new generation of fans, though, The Parting of the Ways was their first experience of losing a Doctor and it's perhaps even more of a shame that it had to be one as fantastic as Christopher Eccleston. Most of the young viewers tuning in were probably completely none the wiser, too, so the image of their new hero disappearing in a ball of flames - to be replaced by a completely different man altogether - would've been confusing to say the very least. In fact, Rose Tyler's face said it all. A moment worthy of the 'pause' button if ever there was one because, at first, it's particularly difficult to come to terms with. You've just watched the Ninth Doctor save the entire universe from the Daleks before sacrificing himself and delivering one of the most heartfelt speeches in TV history, so who the hell's idea was it to make him change his entire face and then make us wait until Christmas to find out what will happen next?! At least they gave us time to let it all sink in. Six months, in fact.
