Doctor Who: 7 Times The Doctor Was Betrayed By Their Companions
5. Missy Sides With Her Past Self
While the Doctor and the Master have worked together on a few occasions throughout the show's history, the Series 10 finale is arguably the closest they've ever been to a typical Doctor-companion relationship.
Here, we get to explore the final, redemptive stages of Missy's character arc, with the Doctor bringing her onboard the TARDIS and teaching her how to be more like him. As you would expect, this plan fails spectacularly, but for a time, Missy was firmly on the Doctor's side.
Despite her newfound good intentions though, Missy is unable to shake the pull of the dark side, and during the cliffhanger of World Enough And Time - the first part of the finale - she fully embraces it, betraying the Doctor in a cold, cold fashion.
Rather than helping the Doctor save Bill, she ditches him and sides with a former version of herself, the Master, instead. Together, Missy and the Master then capture the Doctor and threaten to kill him, before he does one of his signature "clever things" and escapes their evil clutches.
On the plus side, this entire sequence of events seemed to be nothing more than a momentary villainous wobble on Missy's part. Throughout the rest of the story, there's plenty of evidence that she's ready to embrace her good side completely - it's just a shame that she dies before the transformation is finished.
