Doctor Who: 8 Mistakes That Series 13 NEEDS To Fix
6. Making The Timeless Child Actually Matter
The stunning revelation that the Doctor was in fact the Timeless Child, a mysterious being that gave the entire Time Lord race their ability to regenerate, divided the fanbase. Was it a brave, if flawed, step forward for Doctor Who or just a canon-breaking mess that insults the entire franchise’s legacy?
Ultimately, the Timeless Child doesn’t fall flat because it contradicts another part of the show. Virtually every episode in this fifty-seven-year long programme contradicts another one. The Timeless Child doesn’t work because Chibnall himself tells us that it doesn’t really matter.
Mere minutes after learning of her true origins, the Doctor is visited by the mysterious ‘Fugitive Doctor’ in the Gallifreyan Matrix and is told by her that all of these revelations can basically be ignored.
Oh. Okay, then. So what was the point of that last hour exactly?
If Chibnall actually commits to this plotline in Series 13, as opposed to just forgetting all about it, then it would least give the Thirteenth Doctor era some individuality. Because at the moment it just looks like the show wants to leave its mark without actually changing anything, all for fear of annoying the fanbase further.
