Doctor Who: 8 Reasons It Will Be Better After Matt Smith

5. The Characters

A large part of our love for Doctor Who comes from the role of the supporting characters. We get to see his world through the eyes of his companions. We've seen him marry a woman who he encountered out of order in time. We've experienced his devastation when he's lost these friends over and over again. We've also gotten to see some amazing villains: The Master, The Silence, The Great Intelligence and of course the Daleks and Cybermen. Right now we're sitting at a crossroads for the show's supporting cast. River Song is gone (at least for now), The Great Intelligence has been defeated and Clara is still pretty new to equation. Over the next couple of seasons we will get to know a brand new Doctor, finally (hopefully) get to know Clara and will likely be introduced to several new friends and villains. The show has always been great at introducing and developing strong characters and there is no reason to believe that will stop now. Plus, more Vastra, Jenny and Strax is a really, REALLY good thing.
