Doctor Who: 8 Theories About Ryan And Graham's Departure In Revolution Of The Daleks

A bit of a pie-in-the-sky theory for this last one, but it's certainly not out of the realm of possibility. We know that Captain Jack has an important role to play in this story, but what then? What does the future hold for the character? Is this a one-and-done, or is there more to come? It's hard to tell, but let's hope for the latter.

At this stage, there's absolutely no indication that Series 13 will feature a companion other than Yaz, but with Ryan and Graham departing, there's room in the TARDIS for Jack to become the Doctor's regular ship-mate.

We've already seen that Chibnall likes to seed things way in advance - he first dropped a mention of the Timeless Child in the second episode of Series 11, and didn't explain what it meant until the finale of Series 12 - so seeding Jack in Fugitive Of The Judoon could've been the start of a bigger long-term plan for the character.

And hey, let's look at this from a real-world perspective. Imagine you're Chris Chibnall, you're in charge of Doctor Who, and you only have a few years left - a few years left in this once-in-a-lifetime gig, a gig you will never have again. Why not do something huge and crazy while you're the boss, something you know the fans will love?

Making Jack a companion would be an easy win for Chibnall, and this move would allow people to reflect on his era more favourably in the coming decades.

Danny has been with WhatCulture for almost nine years, and is currently Doctor Who Editor and WhoCulture Channel Manager, overseeing all of WhatCulture's Whoniverse coverage. He has been writing and video editing for 10+ years, and first got a taste for content creation after making his own Doctor Who trailers and uploading them to YouTube (they're admittedly a bit rusty by today's standards). If you need someone to recite every Doctor Who episode in order or to tell you about the making of 1988's Remembrance of the Daleks, Danny is the person to ask.
