Some Doctor Who fans were sceptical of pop star Billie Piper's casting as the first companion of the revival era. After all, pointless stunt-casting of celebrities had been an unfortunate trait of the classic series during its last few years and many were wary of the show repeating itself.

Thankfully, Piper proved herself a more than capable for the part and quickly captured the nation's hearts.

Although she officially left the show at the end of Series 2 in 2006, Piper would return several more times for guest appearances. She most recently starred in the 2013 anniversary special The Day of the Doctor, although this was playing the human form of 'The Moment' superweapon rather than Rose specifically.

After her initial departure, Piper took on a more adult role in Secret Diary of a Call Girl, where she played Hannah Baxter, a high-class call girl, until 2011. She was also seen on Showtime's Penny Dreadful embodying a reimagined version of the Bride of Frankenstein.

2020 saw Piper release an original series that she co-created herself, I Hate Suzie, about an actress whose life is thrown into turmoil when compromising photos of her are leaked online. Many critics have named it one of the best shows of the last year.
