Doctor Who: Every Doctor's WORST Episode

7. Time And The Rani (The Seventh Doctor)

Obviously, this list is devoted to the worst that Doctor Who has ever put out, but it is worth noting that the Seventh Doctor’s run did eventually see the show returning to its storytelling peak.

The final Doctor and companion duo, Seven and Ace McShane, are among the greatest to grace our screens and it’s a crying shame that the show was cancelled just when they were getting going.

Unfortunately, the Seventh Doctor’s first companion Mel Bush is nowhere near as beloved, and for good reason. Having two actors with backgrounds in pantomime as the star of the show results in constant attempts to one-up each other with outlandish performances, which just ends up as a headache for the audience.

Toss in Kate O’Mara’s pantomime villain performance as the Rani and you have a story that represents everything wrong with the John Nathan-Turner era of the show.

Doctor Who is a franchise that should never take itself too seriously, but Sylvester McCoy is given none of the intriguing darkness that would later define his Doctor here and so is resigned to playing the spoons and gurning for the camera the entire time.

No wonder that the Rani hasn’t shown up in New Who just yet. Is anyone really missing her?

Owen Davies hasn't written a bio just yet, but if they had... it would appear here.
