Doctor Who: Every Russell T Davies Episode Ranked From Worst To Best
10. Gridlock
You wouldn’t think a story about a traffic jam, the bulk of which is set on redressed versions of the same car set, would number among RTD’s best.
Yet Gridlock absolutely does.
It has plenty of big, impressive visuals, like the wide shots of the New New York motorway and the Macra lurking in the fog.
But the thing that makes it really special is the more intimate stuff – all the time we get to spend with the trapped drivers and passengers, sustained by hymns and hope.
And given that he’s a great big rubber head, the Face of Boe’s death is weirdly moving.
This is also a turning point for our leads, with the Doctor initially lying to Martha about Gallifrey… but finally admitting the truth at the end.
That final scene, where he reminisces about Gallifrey as Abide with Me plays in the background? Chef’s kiss.
