Doctor Who: Every Russell T Davies Episode Ranked From Worst To Best

11. The Sound Of Drums/Last Of The Time Lords

Doctor Who The Sound Of Drums Prime Minister Harold Saxon the Master
BBC Studios

Series 3’s finale was told on a massive canvas, with the Master installed as prime minister and operating from his very own aircraft carrier.

John Simm’s Master is much more manic than his predecessors, but a total match for David Tennant’s Doctor.

And having him in charge right from the beginning, with our leads spending most of part one on the back foot (and on the run) made for a nice change.

Meanwhile, part two is Martha’s story, giving Freema Agyeman a change to shine and neatly setting up her eventual separation from the Doctor.

As for the climax? The Doctor being “prayed” back into existence is a nice sentiment. And the fact that it uses the Master’s tech against him is neat. But it’s not entirely convincing.

Plus, this is the story that gave us the Doctor becoming both Dobby and Jesus. So you can’t have everything.
