Doctor Who: Everything We Just Learned At Comic-Con 2021

2. Classic Doctor Who Villains - Confirmed

Over the last several months, we've seen leaked set pictures indicating that the Weeping Angels and the Sontarans will be appearing in the series, and while the panellists didn't mention those two baddies in particular, they did confirm that Series 13 will feature several "old" Doctor Who villains.

This is yet another element that might tie in with the pandemic's impact on the series. Just look at it like this: when COVID restrictions are plaguing the production, isn't it quicker and cheaper to reach into the vault and pull out a couple of old Weeping Angel props, rather than creating a brand-new villain from scratch?

Sure, there are bound to be some fresh-faced monsters introduced in Series 13 (like those robot droids seen in the trailer, pictured above), but overall, it wouldn't be surprising if the ratio of new villains to old villains leaned heavily towards the latter.

And hey, if the entire series is one long story, and many guest characters will recur over multiple episodes... does this mean that the villains will also be recurring characters? It's interesting to think about, and if that is the case, then the idea of an Alliance-style villainous team-up becomes even more likely.

Danny has been with WhatCulture for almost nine years, and is currently Doctor Who Editor and WhoCulture Channel Manager, overseeing all of WhatCulture's Whoniverse coverage. He has been writing and video editing for 10+ years, and first got a taste for content creation after making his own Doctor Who trailers and uploading them to YouTube (they're admittedly a bit rusty by today's standards). If you need someone to recite every Doctor Who episode in order or to tell you about the making of 1988's Remembrance of the Daleks, Danny is the person to ask.
