Doctor Who: 10 Huge Problems Nobody Wants To Admit About The Doctor

7. ...And Ruining Their Lives Altogether

Since very few would willingly give up the ability to travel across time and space, companions usually end up leaving the TARDIS against their wishes.

The unfortunate side effect of this is that they often ending up leaving the Doctor worse off than before.

Quite often this involves a literal or figurative death. Like Rose being trapped in a parallel universe. Or Captain Jack being cursed with immortality. Or Amy and Rory being trapped in 20th century New York. Or Clara’s date with destiny on Trap Street. Or Adric literally just exploding.

Still, at least they all got to keep their memories, which can’t be said for Jamie and Zoe in the classic series, and Donna in NuWho... initially, at least.

Elsewhere Ruby’s involvement with the Doctor lead to her being targeted by a conspiracy nut, Belinda’s whole life was rewritten, and Tegan simply just couldn't handle all the death and misery anymore.

Each time the companion gets to live, there’s a cost. The Chibnall era is the only one in NuWho where the companions all make it home safely, with their memories intact. Although poor Dan doesn't even have a house anymore, where's he going to live?! And the Doctor just leaves him as though everything's fine?!

Travelling with the Doctor should really come with a health warning, or a big neon sign that says "Proceed With Caution". Chances are you'll never see your family again, and you might just straight-up die. So much for the trip of a lifetime, jeez.
