Doctor Who: Journey To The Centre Of The TARDIS - 8 Ways To Get To The Heart Of The Matter

3. Greed Is Really Not Good

journey3

The salvage crewmember, Gregor Van Baalen, is the personification of greed. He is so corrupt that he has convinced his own brother that he is an android in order to take over his place in the salvage business hierarchy. When his brother Bram is killed by one of the monsters on the TARDIS, a result of his own greedy actions, he really doesn€™t care. Even before they capture the TARDIS, he has already betrayed his family for trash. Gregor can never be satisfied. Greed by its nature is infinite €“ no matter what you have, it will never be enough. Greed is a kind of addiction, and like an addict Gregor is increasingly selfish in his pursuit of it. The opposite of selfishness is empathy. Gregor€™s brother Tricky is quite reminiscent of Emma Grayling€™s empath from €œHide€. He is the most willing to help the Doctor find Clara. He is the most aware of the TARDIS as a living being and sympathizes with her pain. He tries to return the circuit that Gregor steals. In his own quiet way, without even being aware of it, he teaches Gregor to be a better person. When Tricky is trapped, Gregor is forced to realize he cares too much about him to want to hurt him. After he tells Tricky how he has betrayed him he beings to feel some of Tricky€™s pain.
