Doctor Who: Peter Capaldi’s 12 Best Performances As The Twelfth Doctor

No Jelly Baby for guessing the main reason why this episode made the list. Yes, it’s the long-awaited and much-anticipated revelation of the Doctor’s name... “Basil”.

Whilst we could concentrate on a truly momentous occasion in Who lore, there’s, instead, a certain scene-stealing speech by the Doctor that resonates beyond the context of entertainment media.

Doctor Who was originally intended to be an educational programme. And although that primary idea has obviously evolved, Capaldi's virtuosic speech on the futility of war is a lesson to be heeded by every man, woman, child and variations thereupon.

During the tense standoff in the Black Archive, the Doctor cleverly injects what appears to be misplaced humour by channelling game show host Hughie Green, but actually has the desired effect in making Kate, at least, realise the magnitude of the potentially horrifying consequences.

Capaldi sizzles with every fibre of his Doctor's being. His eyes bore into Zygella and his tears, when recounting the awful things he did in the Time War, put a lump in our throats. It's a cliche but words really don't do Capaldi's tour de force performance adequate justice.

Just watch and marvel at the Doctor (and Capaldi) at his best, when on the cusp of the worst thing imaginable. If only we could make him President of Earth.

The name's Colbourn, James - yeah, doesn't quite have the same ring to it.
