10 Doctor Who Questions Not Even Fans Know The Answer To
5. WHEN Is Gallifrey?
Where is Gallifrey? When is Gallifrey? Why is Gallifrey? These are a few things we want to know about the Doctor's home planet. But mainly the middle one.
Originally it was in the constellation of Kasterborous, and its coordinates were 10-0-11-0-0/0-2. Then it was moved to a pocket universe, somewhere down the road.
However, nothing has ever been said about Gallifrey's place in time. Just when is it in relation to Earth?
It’s tempting to assume that Gallifrey is somewhere in our future. In the unaired pilot version of An Unearthly Child, the Doctor's granddaughter Susan said she was born in the 49th century. And fans have long theorised that Gallifreyans evolved from future humans (hence the Doctor’s obsession with Earth).
But Gallifrey does have a past of its own, as evidenced by stories about the Time Lords fighting Vampires etc in the Dark Times, or Tecteun discovering time travel. Are these events in our future too?
Alternatively, what if Earth and Gallifrey share the same present? It would explain why the Time Lords' visits to Earth have always occurred in such a linear fashion, from the Doctor settling in 1963 to the Rani invoking Omega in 2025 (though how stuff like the Time War maps onto Earth's history is anyone’s guess).
Or maybe Gallifrey exists in our past, and all this stuff has already happened. But that's far too timey-wimey to comprehend.
