Doctor Who: Ranking Every Spin-Off From Worst To Best

2. The Sarah Jane Adventures

As good as Big Finish's output is, though, the two greatest Doctor Who spin-offs have to be its two successful TV spin-offs. First up, it's the third and by far the greatest Sarah Jane-based spin-off on the list - The Sarah Jane Adventures.

With its fondness for cliffhangers and lack of the heavy story arcs that characterise modern Who, SJA was an ode to the classic era of its parent series. Though it was mostly aimed at children, the show was always the smartest thing on CBBC over its five season run; you have to love a family-orientated series that has a 60-something year old woman as its star. Plus, unlike Torchwood, SJA even had two Doctors pop up for guest spots - namely the Tenth and Eleventh Doctors. Not to mention fan-pleasing cameos from Jo Grant and the Brigadier himself.

The Sarah Jane Adventures always knew what it wanted to be and excelled at it. In that way, it has to be the most reliable and consistent Doctor Who spin-off. It's still so sad that the show was tragically curtailed when Elisabeth Sladen passed away in 2011.
