Doctor Who: Ranking Every Spin-Off From Worst To Best

1. Torchwood

It is a close run thing, but I have to say that Torchwood is the number one Doctor Who spin-off ever. For starters, none of the others have managed to become cult favourites and earn a rabid fanbase all of their own. Perhaps a lot of that is to do with the walking charisma machine that is Captain Jack Harkness, but the show has a lot of other merits too.

Unlike SJA, though, Torchwood is anything but consistent. For instance, it's first and fourth seasons - the latter moving to the USA - are extremely patchy. However, when it is good, it's really good. The second run is a lot of fun and nails the show's part-X Files, part-Buffy tone perfectly. Meanwhile, the third season - the mini-series Children of Earth - is a cast-iron classic of British sci-fi TV. Its mature, thrilling, devastating take on the alien invasion story easily makes it one of the finest seasons in the whole of the Whoniverse.

Despite Russell T Davies calling it a day back in 2011, Torchwood refuses to stay down. Big Finish have been continuing the adventures of the team (complete with Gareth David Lloyd's Ianto) since last year and John Barrowman is constantly trying to get a revived version off the ground. Let's hope he's successful so that Torchwood can return and show the rest of the spin-offs how it's done.
