Doctor Who: Ranking The New Who Openers From Worst To Best

2. The Impossible Astronaut/Day Of The Moon

After the success of Series 5, Steven Moffat had no hesitation approaching his second series with even grander ideas. Following up on the unanswered questions from the previous series, The Impossible Astronaut began to unravel the mysteries behind the Silence, allowing us to finally see the creatures behind both the Time Cracks, and the TARDIS exploding.

Along with this, there was the introduction of new mysterious elements. The most shocking, of course, was the Eleventh Doctor being gunned down, and murdered, by an astronaut on Lake Silencio. If that wasn't puzzling enough, we're then introduced to a younger version of The Doctor, who is completely in the dark with what's going on.

Needless to say, The Impossible Astronaut proved to be a riveting experience, full of intrigue, and well thought out plotlines that left you wanting to know what happened next. It was even more thrilling due to this opener being the first two part narrative, giving Series 6 an impactful beginning, packed full of shocking, and exciting moments. The American setting also helped with the lifted scale, pushing the boundaries of what Doctor Who could be in the modern age. If there's one negative to point out, it's that we never saw more of Canton Everett Delaware III in future adventures.
