Doctor Who Review: In The Forest Of The Night - 10 Ways The Story Grew

7. The Unreliable Narrator

If the companion is the story teller of the Doctor Who universe then Clara is a most untrustworthy one. She only agrees to let go of her lies when there is no longer any way to deny them. Even as Danny confronts her with irrefutable evidence she does her best to weasel out of telling him the truth. What is the point? Why is she bothering to lie to either Danny or the Doctor? She doesn€™t need to justify herself to either one of them. Perhaps Clara herself doesn€™t know who she is or doesn€™t understand she can be more than one thing. Danny joined the Army and presumably saw many fascinating places in addition to experiencing obvious trauma. He€™s decided that was enough traveling and he wants to focus on current experience rather than seeking new ones. There€™s nothing wrong with that. But there€™s nothing wrong with adventure either. Both ways of living have their risks. One person€™s choice is not inherently better than the other.
