Doctor Who Review: Into The Dalek - 7 Thoughts On A Fantastic Voyage
5. The Birth Of Beauty
The perception of beauty is an ongoing theme in the first two episodes of series eight. The daleks exposure to radiation breaks its programming, opening new pathways in its brain. It sees the same things it always has but it perceives them in a different way. The birth of a star was background trivia until it became art. When the dalek spouts resistance is futile it means its resistance to beauty. It realizes how ridiculous the daleks are being in their refusal to see the universe for what it is rather than for what they want it to be. Once again all it takes is a crack. In this instance a wound in the daleks armor. We cannot see the dark until we let in a little light. The star was not the only thing born that day. The dalek also burst free of its container and opened its eyes to a universe of possibilities.
