Doctor Who Review: Into The Dalek - 7 Thoughts On A Fantastic Voyage

5. The Birth Of Beauty

The perception of beauty is an ongoing theme in the first two episodes of series eight. The dalek€™s exposure to radiation breaks its programming, opening new pathways in its brain. It sees the same things it always has but it perceives them in a different way. The birth of a star was background trivia until it became art. When the dalek spouts €œresistance is futile€ it means its resistance to beauty. It realizes how ridiculous the dalek€™s are being in their refusal to see the universe for what it is rather than for what they want it to be. Once again all it takes is a crack. In this instance a wound in the dalek€™s armor. We cannot see the dark until we let in a little light. The star was not the only thing born that day. The dalek also burst free of its container and opened its eyes to a universe of possibilities.
