Doctor Who: The Doctor's Regeneration Episodes Ranked Worst To Best
12. Logopolis (Fourth Doctor)
This is a slow burner that begins to really intrigue during the thrilling spectacle of Tegan and her Aunt Vanessa changing a car tyre while being, let's say, watched over by a creepy-looking figure in a white morphsuit. Apart from that, it's pretty much like a frustrated Tegan running around the endless TARDIS corridors searching for what block transfer computation and Charged Vacuum Emboitment means.
It feels sacrilege being sardonic towards the venerable Tom Baker's finale, as there are plenty of interesting elements in this story that had the potential to make this truly memorable.
A final showdown against his arch-frenemy the Master, who's as dastardly as ever: playing Russian dolls with the Doctor's TARDIS, zap-happy with his Tissue Compression Eliminator, holds the entire universe to ransom, and most dangerously - laughing maniacally. All combined with incidental music of foreboding 1980s synth and the cloister bell, which always sounds satisfying to the ears.
Yet, it all feels ethereally measured: like everyone is in a dreamlike state, seemingly gathering round for a chitchat while Logopolis collapses around them. Incidentally, you can't help but play the Benny Hill theme in your head when the security guards give chase.
It’s an admirable approach from Christopher H. Bidmead to focus more on hard science fiction, which harks back to the show's original educational concept. However a sprinkling of Douglas Adams pizzazz would've helped to energise things given it's a regeneration story.
Goodbye brilliant bohemian. Hello veterinary physician: clearly Nyssa and Tegan are watching different objects fall as the Doctor does his thing and saves the universe, but cannot save himself. The poignant roll call of enemies and companions prepare him for the moment.
