Doctor Who: The Rings of Akhaten Review - 9 Themes To Think About

7. Voices Rise And Fall. Some Are Never Heard At All

While not fully realized within the episode, the idea of exploring the importance of individual and collective voice is a sound one. At the center of Cross€™ story is a choral piece, a kind of lyrical battleground where songs are the key to keeping the monsters at bay. Voices must not only be lifted, they must be heard in order to contain the chaos that would result from the monster€™s awakening. Merry€™s voice is dismissed by her people; they offer her up as their sacrifice while ignoring her fear and pleas for help. Words are powerful things. They can be used as both lullaby and weapon, and the cries of the one can often be lost in the sound of the crowd. If the choir does not support the soloist, her voice is drowned out and the performance devolves into chaos. If even one voice is out of place, harmony and balance are lost.
