Doctor Who: The Robot Revolution Review - 6 Ups & 5 Downs

9. UP - Retro Robots

Doctor Who The Robot Revolution
BBC Studios

I was a big fan of the visual stylings of this episode, which clearly took inspiration from retro sci-fi comics and B movies, with its shiny, clunky, oversized robots and eyesore of a rocket – RTD says he was aiming for 50s vibes and I think they hit the mark.

Also, I will always give a up to use of practical effects over CG. Special mention must go to Polish-bot, who is the best boy and the clear hero of the episode. I already feel fiercely protective over him, and I am extremely disappointed that he was not adopted by The Doctor and Belinda (he even had a tiny little car boot for storing dust from all that hard work he’s been doing. 10/10. Adorable.).

Whilst it required a little suspension of disbelief in the ‘but why?’ department, I also enjoyed the ‘every ninth word’ weakness for the robots, which forced some fun scriptwriting. My only criticism on this front is that I wish the editing had trusted viewers a little bit more to decode these ‘hidden’ messages themselves, without playing it back almost every time.
