Each Attack On Titan Season Ranked From Worst To Best

This titan of a show seems to never slow down, so let's discuss how it's been up until now.

Attack On Titan
Funimation

For a lot people, Attack on Titan was their first experience with anime. For many others who grew up watching shows like Pokémon and Digimon, it was a chance to see that style of animation addressing dark adult themes and reaching new heights of popularity.

There have been many popular Japanese anime shows that break into western pop culture, including series like Death Note or Sword Art Online. Still, none have ever reached the heights that Attack on Titan had when it first burst into the mainstream.

Although the show's popularity is not what it once was, the series has been going strong for a long time now. Its latest and final season is imminent and therefore now is the perfect time to reflect on the groundbreaking series and evaluate what has been the shows most substantial periods.

Despite running for technically three seasons, the show - as with many anime series - is based more upon storyline arcs as opposed to a traditional full narrative season. Therefore these shall be taken into account, many times splitting a season into two distinct parts.

5. Season 2

The slight black sheep of the AOT family, this season brought in a lot of new information. However, it was the shows first appearance in over three years, and within that time the series popularity had dwindled. This is unfortunate for the show as season two was compelling and featured some brilliant moments, but mostly it had many shocking twists for the story's narrative.

What made the first season so popular had to be the intensity and simplicity of the scenario. There were giant monsters that ate people and those who fought against them.

The idea was simple and executed well; however, an overarching series needs evolution to survive, and this is the direction the source manga took and thus, the show had to follow. This season introduced a lot more complexity to the front and began to make the audience question the motives that we began to learn about from the previous arc.

The season whilst featuring some stunning action set pieces, mostly felt like a set up for what was to come, the introduction of the Beast Titan and the reveal of the Colossal and Armoured Titan's identities were all great moments. Still, the season indeed did seem to be setting up concepts that it intended to develop on later, and thus falls quickly to the bottom of this list.
