Emmys 2016: 9 Ups & 3 Downs
1. Grease: Live Beats Lemonade
More uproar followed when the Outstanding Directing for a Variety Special Emmy went to Grease: Live's Thomas Kail and Alex Rudzinski over Kahlil Joseph and Beyoncé for her highly acclaimed (not to mention enormously socially relevant) Lemonade.
Chris Rock was visibly annoyed (if somewhat playfully) when the result was read out, and even host Jimmy Kimmel half-acknowledged the surprise result, saying, "I wouldn't want to be those guys when Kanye finds out they beat Beyonce."
Sure, Grease: Live was an impressive production in terms of pulling off so many successful moving parts during a live broadcast, but better than Lemonade? Really?
