It's rare that a show will really start to break through late in its run, and when that show has been overlooked for its past three seasons, the general assumption is that it's going to continue being overlooked.

It comes as a shock, then, that the Emmys finally decided to give some love to The Americans. Despite the show constantly being regarded as one of the best on TV, it's struggled in the past with voters and it seemed that trend would continue. It managed writing and Guest Actress nods last year, which it repeats again, but it's the recognition in the major categories that's surprising.

After its fourth season it has made the jump, with nominations for Best Drama Series, and acting noms for its two stars, Matthew Rhys and Keri Russell.
