Emmys 2017: 9 Ups & 6 Downs
3. A Diverse Set Of Winners
With recent years seeing various awards shows criticised for not including a more diverse collection of nominees, it was a relief to see this year's Emmys not only nominate many non-white actors, but actually give them the damn award outright.
Some of the night's biggest winners were persons of colour, such as Donald Glover (now the first black man to win a comedy directing Emmy), Aziz Ansari and Lena Waithe (the latter being the first black woman to win a comedy writing Emmy), Riz Ahmed (the first South Asian acting Emmy winner), and Sterling K. Brown (who won his second consecutive acting Emmy and became the first black man in almost two decades to win the Best Actor Dramatic Emmy)
It was incredibly refreshing to see and decisively threw the gauntlet down to next year's Golden Globe and Oscar ceremonies to ensure they include a more diverse set of nominees, and hopefully winners too.
